What "registered" means in Louisiana

An unarmed officer in Louisiana is not simply hired. Their registration application has to reach the state board within 20 calendar days of the date of hire, with classifiable fingerprints, photo ID and an I-9 attached. The company cuts the temporary registration stub off that application and the officer carries it on duty until the permanent card arrives, which the board must issue within 20 days of receiving a complete file.

That is the paperwork trail you are entitled to ask about. A company that cannot tell you the filing date for the officer standing in your lobby has either not filed or is not tracking it, and working unregistered is illegal in Louisiana, which means an incident on your property involves an officer whose status you cannot defend.

We file inside 48 hours of hire rather than inside 20 days, and we schedule fingerprints in the same week. It costs us nothing to be early and it is the difference between a roster you can evidence and one you cannot.

The 16 hours, and who pays for them

Louisiana requires 8 hours of board-approved training within 30 days of hire and a further 8 hours within 60 days of first assignment, each block followed by an exam, taught by a licensed instructor using the state S.O.S.T. curriculum. Sixteen hours, on a clock that starts the day the officer is hired.

Ask any company you are considering who pays for that training, because the answer predicts your turnover. When the officer pays, the officer leaves. We pay for it and we pay for the time, and an officer who has not completed the current block does not work past the deadline, the schedule enforces that, not somebody's memory.

Where an unarmed post is the wrong answer

An unarmed officer is a witness, a deterrent and a documentation system. They are not an intervention. If your actual problem is an armed robbery pattern, a cash-handling exposure or a site with a history of weapons incidents, an unarmed post is the cheaper answer to a question you did not ask, and we will tell you that before we quote it.

The honest test is what you want to happen at the worst moment. If the answer is “someone calls it in accurately, fast, with photographs”, unarmed is right and it is the majority of posts. If the answer is “someone stops it”, you are looking at armed coverage or at a different security design altogether.
